Koura Clean Energy put 99% of its $3.5 million in a single US exchange-traded fund tracking the NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index, then sat on the rest in cash. That concentration delivered a 27.2% return over the year to March 2025, placing it 4th in the International Share category, but the three-year annualised figure of 1.6% per year sits further back at 21st.

The fund charges a total fee of 1.1% annually, split between a 0.54% management fee, 0.56% in other costs, and a 0.1% performance fee. That sits well above the typical range for passive international equity funds. The First Trust ETF itself tracks companies involved in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean technology, so this is a thematic bet rather than a broad market play. The fund holds no New Zealand or Australian shares, no bonds, and no property.

With a risk level of 6 and 98% in growth assets, this is a high-volatility fund built for long time horizons and a narrow sectoral view. The small fund size and concentrated structure mean movements in the underlying ETF drive almost all the performance.
